Filling your Astra convertible roof with non genuine Holden Astra Convertible Roof Oil can cause the roof pump motor to wear out sooner.

In some cases the failure occurs 70% faster comparison to systems that have been filled with Genuine oil

A hose blowing in the hydraulic roof system generally occurs due to air getting into the system, in many cases a blown hose can be replaced and then in a couple of weeks another hose blows.

In these cases the hose that has the air leak has not been replace but to identify the hose with the leak at the time of replacing the first hose can be a black art.

There are ten hoses in the Astra convertible Bertone roof where are this point we have only ever replaced six hoes the wear out, get crimped of blow the swagged fitting.

Having said that we have replaced set of ten hoses only when the customer has asked to replace the complete set.

What are the options with regard to replacing the Hydraulic hose?

There are a number of hoses in the market place the first is the cheapest is priced around $30 Australian these hose are 2nd hand many have been working on convertible roofs from 8 - 10 years.

After a period these hoses become hard and in flexible and in turn blow from there swagged fittings

The second option is a Chinese product sold for around $80 Australian these hoses last for a period 3 - 6 months from all reports they seem to more flexible than the 2nd hand hoses yet the are not as old and are yet to last a period longer the 2 years

The third option is an Australian made hose price around $600 manufactured in Australian with high pressure hose and stainless steel fittings. This option seems to be the choice of the majority of the Astra Convertible Owners

The final option is to purchase genuine hose and it is best to get pricing from your local Holden Dealer

Generally fixing an Astra roof can be quite cost effective in most cases, yet in other cases we mechanics or back yard operators have touch pull or push parts of the roof to get them moving and have failed or caused more damage.

Other factors to consider in terms of how long the roof will last once it has been repaired can come down to :

• The number of previous owners of the car, when there is a new owner then the convertible roof gets a complete work out for the next six months or until winter arrives
  
• Past maintenance have the replacement parts been fully engineering or patched back together. We have seen instances of the split bearing being replaced with roller bearing which has resulted in the more physical force to open and close the latches. Furthermore we have seen many cases of corrosion or rust where steel and Aluminum have been bonded together without treating raw material post machining. We have seen extensive rust in the front of the roof structure in which a certifying engineer put down to untreated Aluminum in a set off roof latches  
   
• The number of time the roof has been open in total as any or ever mechanical system wears or or cheaper parts are design to be replaced
• Intervals between roof opens as in some cases number of times the roof has been known to effect the reliability of the roof system that not enough opening and to many opening can effect the ongoing functionally of the Astra convertible roof system
